What Is Permanent Jewelry?
Permanent jewelry is a custom-fit bracelet, anklet, or necklace connected with a small welded ring instead of a traditional clasp.
The piece stays in place during everyday wear, so you do not need to take it on and off. It is often chosen to represent a friendship, relationship, birthday, anniversary, family connection, or personal milestone.
Permanent jewelry is not attached to your skin. It can be safely removed whenever necessary by cutting the small connecting ring.
Beyond Permanent Jewelry: Welded or Removable
Traditional permanent jewelry is welded closed, but continuous wear is not practical for everyone.
Some guests may need to remove jewelry because of:
- Medical conditions or procedures
- Workplace requirements
- Sports or physical activities
- Travel
- Skin sensitivity
- Personal preference
Our Beyond Permanent Jewelry experience gives you two finishing options.
Permanent welded finish
A small connecting ring is professionally welded closed, creating a seamless piece without a traditional clasp.
Removable clasp finish
A clasp is added so you can take your jewelry on and off while keeping the same personalized chain, charms, connectors, and custom fit.
Available clasp styles may include:
- Traditional clasps
- Magnetic clasps
- Push-in spring clasps
- Toggle clasps
Our jewelry artists can help you choose a clasp that works with your design, lifestyle, and dexterity needs.
The jewelry is personalized. How you wear it is your choice.
How the Process Works
Creating your jewelry is simple and comfortable.
1. Choose your chain
Compare sterling silver and 14K gold-filled chains in different textures, thicknesses, and styles.
2. Add personalization
Select birthstones, initials, zodiac symbols, charms, or decorative connectors.
3. Choose welded or removable
Decide whether you prefer a traditional permanent weld or one of our removable clasp options.
4. Approve the fit
Your artist measures the chain directly on your wrist, ankle, or neck and adjusts it for comfort.
5. Complete the jewelry
For welded jewelry, a protective barrier is placed between your skin and the chain. A professional jewelry welder closes the connecting ring with a quick, controlled pulse.
For removable jewelry, your artist installs the selected clasp and checks that it opens and closes properly.
6. Final inspection
We inspect the connection, fit, and movement before you leave.
Sterling Silver and 14K Gold-Filled Chains
We focus on premium metals suitable for meaningful, everyday jewelry.
Sterling silver
Sterling silver has a bright, classic appearance and works well with both simple and detailed designs.
Silver may naturally tarnish when exposed to air, moisture, cosmetics, or chemicals. Tarnish can usually be removed with proper cleaning.
14K gold-filled
Gold-filled material has a substantial bonded layer of real 14K gold over a supporting metal core.
It is more durable than ordinary gold-plated jewelry and offers the appearance of gold at a more accessible price than solid gold.
Our chain collection includes styles sourced from established manufacturers in the United States and Italy.
Permanent Jewelry for Friends, Couples, and Families
Permanent jewelry is often chosen as a shared experience.
Popular appointments include:
- Best friends
- Couples
- Mothers and daughters
- Sisters
- Parents and children
- Family members
- Birthday groups
- Bridal parties
You can choose matching chains, share a birthstone or symbol, or create different designs that reflect each person’s individual style.
The jewelry does not need to match exactly. The shared experience creates the connection.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does permanent jewelry have to be welded?
No. BU Jewelry Social offers both welded permanent jewelry and removable clasp options.
Available clasp styles may include traditional clasps, magnetic clasps, push-in spring clasps, and toggles.
Can I choose a clasp if I have a medical condition?
Yes. A removable clasp may be a better option if you need to remove jewelry for medical appointments, procedures, treatment, swelling, imaging, or other health-related reasons.
Ask your healthcare provider whether jewelry needs to be removed for your specific condition or procedure.
Does permanent jewelry hurt?
No. The jewelry is not welded to your skin.
A protective barrier is placed between your skin and the chain, and the welder uses a quick, controlled pulse to close the connecting ring.
Can permanent jewelry be removed?
Yes. Carefully cut the small connecting ring with scissors or jewelry cutters.
Save the complete chain if you may want it inspected or rewelded later.
Is permanent jewelry really permanent?
It is designed for continuous wear, but it does not have to stay on forever.
The jewelry can be removed when needed and may break if it catches on something with enough force.
What materials do you offer?
Our primary materials are sterling silver and 14K gold-filled chains.
Available chains, charms, gemstones, and connectors may change.
Is gold-filled the same as gold-plated?
No. Gold-filled material has a much thicker bonded layer of real gold than ordinary gold-plated jewelry.
It is generally more durable for regular wear.
Can I add birthstones, initials, or zodiac charms?
Yes. Depending on current availability, you can add birthstone chains, gemstone connectors, initial letters, zodiac symbols, and other meaningful charms.
Can permanent jewelry get wet?
Sterling silver and gold-filled jewelry can generally tolerate normal contact with water.
Chlorine, saltwater, cleaning products, and other chemicals may affect jewelry over time. Rinse and dry the jewelry after exposure when practical.
Can I wear permanent jewelry through airport security?
Fine jewelry generally does not need to be removed during normal airport screening, but requirements may vary.
Always follow the instructions of security personnel.
What happens if I need a medical procedure?
Ask your healthcare provider whether the jewelry must be removed.
If removal is required, cut the connecting ring and save the chain. It may be possible to reweld it later if it remains in suitable condition.
Can broken permanent jewelry be repaired?
Possibly. Bring the chain and all remaining components to the studio.
We will inspect the jewelry and determine whether it can be repaired or rewelded.
Do you offer birthday and bridal parties?
Yes. We offer private jewelry experiences for birthdays, bridal parties, bachelorette gatherings, family celebrations, girls’ nights, and other occasions. It's recommended for age 12 years and older.
